<p>You’re probably sporting a brand-new tattoo
right now (or thinking about getting one real soon). And if so, you’re probably
wondering how you can minimise the inevitable post-tattoo woes of sticky body
fluids oozing out of your tattoo…. and later on, the soreness and the itching. </p>

<p>Well, if you’ve got Aquaphor in your
medicine cabinet, you’re in luck! Aquaphor for tattoos is a thing, and yes, a
lot of tattooed folks swear by it. So, read on to find out if this popular
ointment is as good as others say it is. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What exactly is Aquaphor?</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquaphor-Baby-Healing-Ointment-Cracked/dp/B005UEB96K/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="261" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aquaphor-healing-ointment-one-of-the-most-affordable-tattoo-healing-products-261x300.jpg" alt="Aquaphor healing ointment works not just for diaper rashes, but for new tattoos as well" class="wp-image-32" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aquaphor-healing-ointment-one-of-the-most-affordable-tattoo-healing-products-261x300.jpg 261w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aquaphor-healing-ointment-one-of-the-most-affordable-tattoo-healing-products-891x1024.jpg 891w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aquaphor-healing-ointment-one-of-the-most-affordable-tattoo-healing-products-768x883.jpg 768w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aquaphor-healing-ointment-one-of-the-most-affordable-tattoo-healing-products.jpg 1305w" sizes="(max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px" /></a></figure></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center has-small-font-size"><strong>Ingredients: Petrolatum (41%),
mineral oil, ceresin, lanolin alcohol, panthenol, glycerin, bisabolol</strong></p>

<p>Aquaphor has a solid line of skincare
products made for both babies and adults. If you’ve got small kids, you
probably have a tube of healing ointment or diaper rash cream stowed in your
diaper bag right now. </p>

<p>When it comes to tattoos though, when
people say ‘Aquaphor for tattoos,’ they’re actually referring to the Aquaphor
Healing Ointment. Now, this ointment isn’t targeted to the tattoo crowd per se.
But it’s such an effective skin healing and repairing cream that tattoo
enthusiasts all over the world love it! </p>

<p>This healing ointment is clinically proven
to treat all sorts of things. From minor cuts and scrapes, moisturising dry and
cracked skin, to healing chapped lips and curing minor burns. </p>

<p>Aquaphor is like the swiss army knife of
medicated ointments. You can continue using this product long after your tattoo
has healed, which is excellent value for money in my opinion! </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Is Aquaphor good or safe for tattoos?</h2>

<p>Some people think Aquaphor is exactly the same as <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/vaseline-on-tattoos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vaseline petroleum jelly</a>. But that’s not the case. Vaseline does have its uses, but it’s made with 100% petrolatum which doesn’t allow the skin to breathe at all. </p>

<p>Aquaphor, on the other hand, is only <strong>41% petrolatum.</strong> Apparently, this is just the right amount to let oxygen in the skin and still block harmful pathogens from <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/infected-tattoo-causes-symptoms-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infecting your tattoo</a>. Additionally, Aquaphor contains <strong>lanolin alcohol, panthenol </strong>and<strong> glycerine</strong>. These ingredients work to moisturise and nourish the skin. </p>

<p>This ointment is like a two-pronged sword
that protects the outside of the skin and heals the inside. So, to answer the
question, <strong>yes, Aquaphor is safe for use on new tattoos</strong>. </p>

<p>Here’s a neat graphic from Aquaphor’s
website to illustrate how this multi-purpose ointment works to heal your new
tattoo:</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Pros and Cons of using Aquaphor for tattoos</h2>

<p>Now that you know Aquaphor is good and safe
enough for tattoo use, here are the positive and negative aspects of using this
amazing ointment.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What I really like about Aquaphor:</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Seals the skin from irritants</strong></li></ul>

<p>With gaping needle holes on your skin, you
don’t want anything other than air and oxygen getting into your skin.
Aquaphor’s petrolatum content is just enough to seal the skin and let the air
in at the same time. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Reduces scabbing</strong></li></ul>

<p>Tattoos are technically open wounds, and
wounds will scab naturally. However, thanks to Aquaphor’s healing formula, the
scabs won’t be as thick as it would be if you didn’t put ointment on it. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Prevents infection</strong></li></ul>

<p>For all intents and purposes, Aquaphor is occlusive. It may not be as occlusive as Vaseline (which is 100% petrolatum), but it’s occlusive enough to prevent pathogens from entering the skin, which helps with preventing infections! </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Helps speed up tattoo healing process</strong></li></ul>

<p>Since your skin is being protected from the
outside world and it’s being simultaneously repaired from the inside, the
healing process will naturally speed up as well. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Reduces itching</strong></li></ul>

<p>The worst thing about getting a tattoo is the itch when it finally starts healing up. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll most likely still experience itching even if you apply Aquaphor regularly. However, it won’t be as bad as when you <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/dry-healing-tattoo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dry heal your tattoo</a>!</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Non-comedogenic</strong></li></ul>

<p>If you’ve got sensitive skin and you’re
prone to getting clogged up pores, then you’ll like Aquaphor. It’s
non-comedogenic so it’s not going to cause acne breakouts UNLESS you slather on
a super thick layer on your skin. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Very affordable</strong></li></ul>

<p>A 14oz jar retails for around 15 pounds on
Amazon, but you can probably get it cheaper at supermarkets or pharmacies
nearby. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Widely available</strong></li></ul>

<p>You’ll find Aquaphor for sale in many places. It’s so widely available, in fact, that you may already have a tube or jar stored in your medicine cabinet! </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquaphor-Baby-Healing-Ointment-Cracked/dp/B005UEB96K/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="600" height="60" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Buy-now-on-Amazon.png" alt="" class="wp-image-62" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Buy-now-on-Amazon.png 600w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Buy-now-on-Amazon-300x30.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></figure></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What
I don’t like about Aquaphor:</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="297" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-jar-back-side-300x297.png" alt="back view of aquaphor jar" class="wp-image-199" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-jar-back-side-300x297.png 300w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-jar-back-side-150x150.png 150w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-jar-back-side.png 527w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><figcaption>Drug facts and warnings on the back of Aquaphor jar</figcaption></figure></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Can cause skin breakouts</strong></li></ul>

<p>Aquaphor’s non-comedogenic, but if you go
overboard with the application, then don’t be surprised to see pimples pop up
overnight! It may only be 41% petrolatum, but it may very well be a hundred
percent if you smother your skin with it!</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>You may be sensitive to some ingredients</strong></li></ul>

<p>Aquaphor’s supposed to be safe for most
skin types. Their adult and baby ointments use the same ingredients, which
means it’s safe for use even on babies. But some people just don’t react well
to petrolatum. If you’re looking for a more natural ointment, check out Hustle
Butter instead. </p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to use Aquaphor on a new tattoo</h2>

<p>Now that you know
Aquaphor’s got a couple of downsides too, you need to know how to use this
ointment properly, so you don’t run into problems later on. </p>

<p><strong>Step 1: Clean
the area properly</strong></p>

<p>Remove the cling film your tattooist used to protect the tattoo. Then wash the area with warm water and unscented, antibacterial soap (here’s our list of the <a href="https://tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/best-tattoo-soap" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">best tattoo soaps</a>). This will break down the blood, pus, and plasma, so your skin can finally breathe. It will sting a bit, but it won’t be as bad as when you were getting the tattoo done. </p>

<p>Anyway, this step
is extremely important for brand-new tattoos. Since Aquaphor is an occlusive
ointment, any dirt that gets trapped underneath it won’t be able to get out
until the next wash. This increases the likelihood of getting an infection if
you’re not careful with this step. </p>

<p><strong>Step 2: Let
skin dry partially</strong></p>

<p>You can either
air dry the skin or pat it gently with clean cloth or kitchen roll. You don’t
want to let it get too dry though as you want some moisture in before you apply
Aquaphor. </p>

<p><strong>Step 3: Apply
a very thin layer of Aquaphor on tattoo</strong></p>

<p>A thin layer is all you need to protect your new tattoo. Too much and your skin won’t be able to breathe. Too little and you’ll miss a spot that would be a likely entry point for pathogens. That said, make sure you apply that thin layer evenly to ensure the tattoo underneath heals properly. </p>

<p><strong>Step 4: Repeat steps 1 to 3 twice or
thrice daily UNTIL your tattoo stops oozing plasma</strong></p>

<p>Once your tattoo stops oozing, it means you’re now ready for the next stage of the aftercare process – <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/best-tattoo-aftercare-products/#Stage_3_In_The_Tattoo_Healing_Process_MOISTURISE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moisturising</a>. We highly recommend using <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/After-Inked-Tattoo-Aftercare-Lotion/dp/B005I4R75O/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">After Inked vegan tattoo aftercare lotion</a>. It’s enriched with grapeseed oil, shea butter, jojoba seed oil, and other tattoo-friendly ingredients. The entire team here absolutely loves this lotion!</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aquaphor vs A+D Ointment for tattoo healing</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="664" height="372" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-vs-ad-ointment-which-is-better-for-tattoos.png" alt="aquaphor vs a+d ointment graphic" class="wp-image-200" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-vs-ad-ointment-which-is-better-for-tattoos.png 664w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-vs-ad-ointment-which-is-better-for-tattoos-300x168.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px" /></figure></div>

<p>Most tattooists recommend either <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquaphor-Baby-Healing-Ointment-Cracked/dp/B005UEB96K/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Aquaphor</a> or <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Ointment-All-Purpose-Skincare-Formula/dp/B01IF56PIC/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">A+D Ointment </a>during the initial stages of tattoo healing. Here are their similarities and differences:</p>

<p><strong>Protection: </strong>Both
products use petrolatum and mineral oil, with Aquaphor being made of 41%
petrolatum and A+D at 53.4%. This means A+D is slightly more occlusive, but
will definitely still allow oxygen in the skin. </p>

<p><strong>Healing and nourishing: </strong>Aquaphor has both panthenol and glycerine to heal and nourish the
skin. But A+D is formulated with lanolin (15.5%) and thanks to cod liver oil,
it has vitamins A &amp; D in it as well. </p>

<p><strong>Fragrance: </strong>Aquaphor
is fragrance-free while A+D has fragrance listed in its ingredients. </p>

<p><strong>Price: </strong>Aquaphor
is a few pounds cheaper than A+D, so that’s a plus for Aquaphor.</p>

<p><strong>Texture: </strong>Since
Aquaphor has lower petrolatum content, it is slightly less greasy than A+D.</p>

<p><strong>Summary: </strong>Honestly, picking one over the other is a personal preference. Both ointments work great at healing tattoos. However, I would recommend Aquaphor if you’re allergic to lanolin (some people are) and if you already have a tube or jar at home! Otherwise, you really can’t go wrong with either one. </p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Frequently Asked Questions about Aquaphor for tattoos: </h2>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Which Aquaphor Healing Ointment should I use for my new tattoo? The baby one or the regular one? </h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="693" height="389" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-baby-vs-regular-ointment.png" alt="which is better for tattoos - aquaphor baby vs regular ointment" class="wp-image-197" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-baby-vs-regular-ointment.png 693w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/aquaphor-baby-vs-regular-ointment-300x168.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px" /></figure>

<p>Well, both variations contain the same
ingredients, but the baby ointment is formulated especially for baby skin. It’s
supposed to be more gentle, so if you have sensitive skin, I highly recommend
buying the Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment. Otherwise, the regular one will work
just fine for you! </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How much Aquaphor ointment to put on tattoo?</h4>

<p>This ointment is great, yes, but you need
to watch out how much product you slather on your skin! It may not be a 100%
petroleum jelly-based product, but it still has occlusive properties. </p>

<p>This means if you slap on a thick layer,
your skin won’t be able to get much-needed oxygen to aid in the healing
process. This leads to a slower rate of healing, and worse, can possibly cause
skin irritations and acne breakouts!</p>

<p>When it comes to tattoos and ointments, no
matter which brand you ultimately end up using, a very thin layer is all you
need to put on. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How long to use Aquaphor on tattoos, i.e. how many days? </h4>

<p>Most experts recommend using Aquaphor from day 1 until the tattoo stops oozing clear plasma. However, with ingredients like panthenol and glycerine, Aquaphor will continue moisturising your tattoo even when it’s already fully healed. However, it’s not primarily a moisturiser, so it won’t hydrate the skin as well as a good <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/tattoo-lotions-ointments-creams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tattoo moisturiser, lotion, or cream</a> will.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How often should I put Aquaphor on my tattoo?</h4>

<p>Twice or thrice daily should suffice. You
don’t want to wash and clean the area every two hours because it’s going to dry
out the skin. So, limit the washing to 3x daily at most and apply a thin layer
of Aquaphor healing ointment after.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Will Aquaphor burn my tattoo?</h4>

<p>It shouldn’t. But for fresh tattoos, you
might experience a stinging or burning sensation. It should go away after a few
minutes. If the pain worsens instead of becoming more bearable, wash the area
again with soap and water. Call up your tattooist or your GP and ask for advice
as you may be allergic to Aquaphor. Or, worse, your tattoo may already be
infected.&nbsp; </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Does Aquaphor pull ink out of tattoos?</h4>

<p>Well, this is a scary one. You obviously
don’t want your healing ointment pulling ink out of your skin. Here’s the
answer: </p>

<p>If the tattoo was done correctly, that is,
ink was deposited in the dermis layer, then no, Aquaphor won’t pull out ink in
the dermis. However, take note that some ink will also get on the <strong>epidermis </strong>(this
is totally normal). Now, the epidermis skin cells regenerate constantly and the
ink deposited there WILL slough off. </p>

<p>So, if you see ink coming off the next time you wash the tattoo, don’t worry, it’s not Aquaphor’s fault. That ink from the epidermis will come off whether you use Aquaphor or not. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What are some ‘Aquaphor for tattoos’ side effects?</h4>

<p>Aquaphor&#8217;s quite safe to use for all ages.
In fact, the baby healing ointment is paediatrician recommended, and the
regular version is dermatologist recommended. It&#8217;s clinically proven to repair
minor cuts and scrapes, dry and cracked skin, and more. </p>

<p>However, if you experience any stinging,
burning, redness or irritation, please don&#8217;t ignore it. If you think your
tattoo’s infected – whether it be because of Aquaphor or some other aftercare
product &#8211; speak to your GP immediately.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<p>Getting your brand-new tattoo to heal up fast isn’t exactly rocket science. With discipline and some good aftercare products like Aquaphor, <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/tattoo-healing-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">your new tattoo will heal up</a> in no time at all!&nbsp; </p>

<p>Your tattoo is permanent… well, kind of. It’s permanent in the sense that it’s going to <em>stay on your skin</em> for the rest of your life. But it’s definitely not permanent in terms of its <em>appearance</em>. Your tattoo may look awesome now, but in a few months or years, not so much. But don’t fret! With the help of aftercare lotions, ointments and creams, your precious skin art will look great for far longer than if you didn’t use any at all!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Lotions, Ointments, and Creams Are Essential in Tattoo Aftercare</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="675" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-1024x675.jpg" alt="lotions ointments and creams are essential in healing and maintaining tattoo" class="wp-image-135" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-1024x675.jpg 1024w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-768x506.jpg 768w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-1536x1013.jpg 1536w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/image-for-section-why-Lotions-Ointments-and-Creams-are-essential-in-tattoo-aftercare-2048x1351.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Before I explain
why all these products are necessary in aftercare, let me give you a quick background
on how the human skin (and tattoos) work:</p>

<p>Like clockwork, our skin nourishes and regenerates on its own. Old skin cells shed and exfoliate constantly, and new ones rise to the top to replace their fallen comrades. Now, all this replacing of skin cells happens on the outermost layer of skin called the <strong>epidermis</strong>. Since <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/what-is-tattoo-ink-made-of/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tattoo ink</a> is inserted in the <strong>dermis</strong> layer, nothing happens to it (this is why tattoos are permanent).</p>

<p>So, how is
this relevant to aftercare lotions, ointments, and creams?</p>

<p>Well, when
you get yourself a tattoo, your skin needs help repairing itself. It will heal
on its own eventually, but since freshly inked skin is pretty much an open
wound, it needs all the help it can get. Otherwise, it’s bound to get infected.
This is where these skincare products come in – they’re designed to repair,
protect and moisturise your skin, and of course, your tattoo.</p>

<p>There are
tons of aftercare products to choose from. But they all have one thing in
common &#8211; they all aim to make skin look better. And the better your skin looks,
the better your tattoo looks as well. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Different Types of Tattoo
Aftercare Products (And When To Use It)</h2>

<p>Let’s face it: the world of aftercare products is complex and confusing. There are far too many brands trying to get a piece of the <a href="https://blog.marketresearch.com/tattoo-parlors-tattoo-removal-is-now-a-booming-3-billion-industry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">$3 billion tattoo industry pie</a>. If you’re trying to navigate the aftercare world on your own, be prepared to get lost in the rabbit hole for hours! Hopefully, this guide will cut your research time in half. </p>

<p><strong>Quick note</strong>: I’ve purposely excluded <strong>tattoo soaps</strong> in this article. Even though soap is essential in cleaning out freshly done tattoos during the first week or so, it’s distinctly different from all the other aftercare products like lotions, ointments, creams, and so on. If you want to know more about <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/best-tattoo-soap" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aftercare soaps</a> and the cleaning stage of tattoo healing, <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/best-tattoo-aftercare-products/#Stage_1_In_The_Tattoo_Healing_Process_CLEAN" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">click here</a>. </p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">(1)&nbsp; Moisturisers</h3>

<p><em><strong>What is it?</strong></em></p>

<p>To the untrained eye, moisturisers look and feel just like
lotions, albeit a bit thicker in texture and consistency. It’s more oil-based
than water-based, which means it has a slower absorption rate than most lotions.
However, the upside is that the oil helps to seal in the moisture far longer
than regular lotion would. </p>

<p><em><strong>When to use it?</strong></em></p>

<p>When you feel like your skin’s starting to dry out, it means
it’s time to apply a fresh, new coating of your favourite tattoo healing
moisturiser. It’s also great for helping get rid of the itchiness that comes with
a healing tattoo. </p>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Overall Best Moisturiser For New And Old Tattoos – After Inked Tattoo Aftercare Lotion</h4>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: purified water, grapeseed oil, vegetable glycerin, stearic acid, shea butter, synthetic beeswax, jojoba seed oil, vegetable cetyl alcohol, orange oil, benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid</p>

<p>We love, love, LOVE After Inked Tatto Aftercare Lotion! We’ve tested a lot of products and this one&#8217;s at the top of our list. This has been in the market for a few years, so there&#8217;s a lot of feedback from actual users all over the UK (and beyond). </p>

<p>My colleagues are pretty picky when it comes to stuff like this. Tattoos are precious works of art, you know. We previously liked Hustle Butter, but ever since we’ve tried out After Inked, we’ve put aside our jars of Hustle Butter and switched to this brand. </p>

<p>That said, After Inked is an excellent tattoo healing moisturiser. Its base ingredient is grapeseed oil which means it’s easily absorbed by the skin. You also get the benefit of <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/tattoo-healing-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">faster skin healing</a> and protection from free radicals. Oh, and it’s also priced very fairly which is always a plus in my book! </p>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Best Fragrance-Free Moisturiser For Tattoos &#8211; Cetaphil Fragrance Free Moisturising Lotion</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="155" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Cetaphil-moisturising-lotion-155x300.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-113" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Cetaphil-moisturising-lotion-155x300.jpg 155w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Cetaphil-moisturising-lotion-529x1024.jpg 529w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Cetaphil-moisturising-lotion-768x1486.jpg 768w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Cetaphil-moisturising-lotion.jpg 775w" sizes="(max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene,
Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Tocopheryl
Acetate (Vitamin E), Dimethicone, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate,Caprylyl
Glycol, Benzyl Alcohol, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Stearoxytrimethylsilane,
Stearyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer</p>

<p>This Cetaphil
product is primarily a lotion in terms of texture and consistency. But with 6
moisturising ingredients, this is also an effective moisturiser. It’s also
infused with vitamins E and B5 which makes your skin smooth, soft and nourished
for a full 24 hours. Oh, and we love the fact that it’s fragrance-free, which
is great for people allergic to fragrances. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cetaphil-473-ml-Moisturising-Lotion/dp/B00LMD8SKS/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="60" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-137" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/1.png 600w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/1-300x30.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></figure></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">(2)&nbsp; Lotions </h3>

<p><em><strong>What is it? </strong></em></p>

<p>Tattoo lotions
have a much higher water content than moisturisers. Because of this, lotions are
typically light and non-greasy and are therefore easier to spread out over a
larger surface. Since it’s not as thick as moisturisers, you can quickly apply
lotion to your entire body. It’s also a cost-effective aftercare product since
lotions are generally much cheaper than moisturisers. &nbsp;</p>

<p><em><strong>When to use it?</strong></em></p>

<p>You can use&nbsp; aftercare lotion as soon as your tattoo stops
‘weeping.’ This means the tiny needle holes are starting to close up, so it won’t
sting after application. You can also continue using it long after your tattoo
has healed.</p>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Overall Best Unscented Lotion To Use On New Tattoo – Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Lotion</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="126" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aveeno-daily-body-moisturising-lotion-an-affordable-aftercare-lotion-1-126x300.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aveeno-daily-body-moisturising-lotion-an-affordable-aftercare-lotion-1-126x300.jpg 126w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Aveeno-daily-body-moisturising-lotion-an-affordable-aftercare-lotion-1.jpg 391w" sizes="(max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: [FPT-0574], aqua, glycerin, distearyldimonium
chloride, isopropyl palmitate, paraffinum liquidum, cetyl alcohol, dimethicone,
avena sativa (oat), kernel flour, paraffin, cera microcristallina, stearyl
alcohol, myristyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, sodium chloride</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but I personally love oats. Thanks
to Aveeno, oats aren&#8217;t just limited to breakfast. Now, I can slather it on my
skin because Aveeno&#8217;s Daily Moisturising Body Lotion is formulated with prebiotic
colloidal oat.</p>

<p>Apply Aveeno lotion on your tattoo or your entire body, and
24 hours later, your skin will still feel soft and supple. This moisturising and
healing lotion restores the skin’s natural barrier function. This means less moisture
escapes the skin and evaporates. With daily use, it promises to improve dry skin
within 2 weeks! </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aveeno-Daily-Moisturising-Lotion-Packaging/dp/B003H2GGZQ/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="60" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/2-1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-140" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/2-1.png 600w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/2-1-300x30.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></figure></div>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Best Lotion For Old Tattoos – Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="143" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Lubriderm-daily-moisture-lotion-143x300.jpg" alt="not a fan of aveeno's oat-based lotions? check out lubriderm's daily moisture lotion instead to keep your tattoo looking fresh" class="wp-image-38" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Lubriderm-daily-moisture-lotion-143x300.jpg 143w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Lubriderm-daily-moisture-lotion-489x1024.jpg 489w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Lubriderm-daily-moisture-lotion.jpg 716w" sizes="(max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: water, mineral oil, glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alchol, dimethicone, petrolatum, ethylhexylglycerin, carbomer, ceteareth-20, dmdh hydantoin, sodium hydroxide, sodium citrate, panthenol, citric acid, titanium dioxide</p>

<p>Lubriderm is another popular skincare brand. Their line of lotions is pretty much in the same category as Aveeno and Cetaphil in that they are affordable and widely available. Lubriderm, however, is just a tad more expensive by a few quid, but it’s nothing to write home about. </p>

<p>That said, this lotion is great for moisturising already healed tattoos thanks to its vitamin B5-infused formula. It is also fragrance-free, non-greasy, and has a 24-hour moisturising power just like Aveeno’s and Cetaphil’s line of lotions. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">(3)&nbsp; Ointments </h3>

<p><em><strong>What is it?</strong></em></p>

<p>Ointments are formulated with higher oil content (like petrolatum and mineral oil). It has a much thicker consistency than moisturisers, which means it’s absorbed slowly into the skin. With more oil in the formula, it’s greasy to the touch, but the upside is it does a great job of retaining moisture in the skin. It also acts as a barrier and skin protectant to <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/infected-tattoo-causes-symptoms-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prevent skin infections</a>.</p>

<p><em><strong>When to use it?</strong></em></p>

<p>Because of
its skin barrier function, ointments are great for use on fresh tattoos. Since needle
holes are still pretty much open at this point, the ointment will temporarily ‘close’
the broken skin to prevent harmful pathogens from entering. </p>

<p>Just a word of caution though, your skin needs oxygen to heal. Since ointments act as skin barrier, they can also block out oxygen. It is therefore important to only apply a very thin layer of ointment, so it doesn’t clog up your pores and delay the tattoo healing process. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: Petrolatum (53.4%), lanolin (15.5%), cod liver
oil (contains vitamins a &amp; d), light mineral oil, fragrance,
microcrystalline wax, paraffin</p>

<p>A+D barely edged out <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/aquaphor-for-tattoos" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aquaphor</a> for the crown in this category. Price and quality-wise, these two ointments are neck and neck. However, A+D won by virtue of its vitamin A and D infused formula, courtesy of cod liver oil (see ingredients list). Lanolin also works to keep the skin soft while petrolatum shields the wound from harmful germs and bacteria. </p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">(4)&nbsp; Creams</h3>

<p><em><strong>What is it? </strong></em></p>

<p>Creams are
more or less equal parts water and oil. In terms of viscosity, creams are most
similar to moisturisers – thicker than lotion but not quite as thick as ointments.
Because of its nature, creams are easy to spread all over the tattooed area
(great for full sleeve tattoos). It doesn’t do well as a skin barrier or protectant,
but since it’s absorbed more quickly, it does a great job moisturising the
skin.</p>

<p><em><strong>When to use it?</strong></em></p>

<p>It’s best
to use aftercare creams once the tattoo has stopped ‘weeping.’ This could be a
few days up to a week after getting tattooed. Since it’s absorbed more quickly
(thanks to its water content), it doubles as an effective moisturiser, too.</p>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Best Cream For New Tattoo &#8211; Butter Up Tattoo Aftercare</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="293" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Butter-Up-Tattoo-Aftercare-one-of-the-best-cream-to-use-for-tattoo-aftercare-293x300.jpg" alt="Butter Up Tattoo care rich body butter may be a bit expensive, but users love this stuff" class="wp-image-34" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Butter-Up-Tattoo-Aftercare-one-of-the-best-cream-to-use-for-tattoo-aftercare-293x300.jpg 293w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Butter-Up-Tattoo-Aftercare-one-of-the-best-cream-to-use-for-tattoo-aftercare.jpg 444w" sizes="(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: Aqua, cocoa butter, avocado oil, sunflower seed
oil, cetearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, olive oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil,
stearic acid, xanthan gum, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, parfum</p>

<p>Ordinarily, creams aren’t as good as ointments in the initial healing stages of a new tattoo. However, Butter Up’s formulated in such a way that it works even for freshly done tattoos! It’s anti-inflammatory and is enriched with antioxidants and vitamin E to aid with the skin’s healing process. </p>

<p>This is a great alternative to Aquaphor and A+D ointments since both of these products are petroleum-based. So, if you want a more natural (not to mention, vegan and cruelty-free) product, then this is the right cream for your new tattoo! </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NMTGHMY/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="60" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-142" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4.png 600w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-300x30.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></figure></div>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Best Tattoo Maintenance Cream For Old Tattoos &#8211; &nbsp;H2Ocean Skin Moisturising Cream </h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="116" height="300" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/H2Ocean-ocean-care-skin-moisturising-cream-116x300.jpg" alt="H2Ocean's ocean care cream is recommended by tattooists, but the price may be prohibitive for some" class="wp-image-36" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/H2Ocean-ocean-care-skin-moisturising-cream-116x300.jpg 116w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/H2Ocean-ocean-care-skin-moisturising-cream-397x1024.jpg 397w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/H2Ocean-ocean-care-skin-moisturising-cream.jpg 581w" sizes="(max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size">Ingredients: Purified water, stearic acid (coconut),
glyceryl stearate, peg 100 stearate, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, caprylic/capric
triglyceride, glycerin (vegetable), dimethicone (silica), jojoba oil, microcrystalline
cellulose, rose hip seed oil, peg 8 stearate, cety alcohol, aloe vera gel,
triethanolamine, tocopheryl acetate, allantoin, methylparaben, propylparaben,
sclerotium gum, sea salt</p>

<p>I really
like H2Ocean’s tattoo aftercare cream because it’s water-based and is
petroleum-free, so it’s not going to clog up your pores if you use it daily.
You can start using it a few days after getting your tattoo, but you can also use
it long-term (for old tattoos). </p>

<p>The only downside is it’s quite expensive, so if you don’t have deep pockets, I recommend you check out After Inked Aftercare Lotion instead. It’s a moisturiser, yes, but it’s also got a creamy consistency, and After Inked will give you better value for your money. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/H2Ocean-Tattoo-Aftercare-Moisturing-Cream/dp/B000HP3MIU/?tag=tatmos-21" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="60" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-142" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4.png 600w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-300x30.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></figure></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">(5)&nbsp; Balms </h3>

<p><em><strong>What is it?</strong></em></p>

<p>If you
think ointments are thick, wait until you get your hands on a balm. Tattoo balms
are usually formulated with either oil or beeswax at its base, and is therefore
solid to the touch. Also contributing to its solid state is the fact that it
has very little to no water in its formula. Most balms sold in the market are
packed densely in a jar (a common container for balms). </p>

<p><em><strong>When to use it? </strong></em></p>

<p>Balms make
great skin protectants, but whether or not it lets your skin breathe depends on
the kind of base used. If it’s petroleum-based, then it won’t let oxygen in. However,
if it uses a more natural base like beeswax and coconut oil, then it will keep
out the irritants BUT will let oxygen in.</p>

<h4 class="has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Best Organic Tattoo Balm &#8211; Coconut King Aftercare Balm</h4>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-medium"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="206" src="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Coconut-King-tattoo-aftercare-balm-good-post-tattoo-aftercare-product-300x206.jpg" alt="Coconut King is affordable and is generally regarded as a good tattoo aftercare product" class="wp-image-35" srcset="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Coconut-King-tattoo-aftercare-balm-good-post-tattoo-aftercare-product-300x206.jpg 300w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Coconut-King-tattoo-aftercare-balm-good-post-tattoo-aftercare-product-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Coconut-King-tattoo-aftercare-balm-good-post-tattoo-aftercare-product-768x528.jpg 768w, https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Coconut-King-tattoo-aftercare-balm-good-post-tattoo-aftercare-product.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>Ingredients</strong>: Coconut oil, shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter</p>

<p>This is an excellent product that has received raving reviews from those who’ve tried it. Just like Butter Up, this balm is also made from <a href="https://www.tattoomoisturiser.co.uk/tattoos-and-coconut-oil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coconut oil</a>. Its thick consistency leads to a sped-up tattoo healing process. This balm is perfect for use during the initial stages of the healing process since it’s quickly absorbed by the skin.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Words</h2>
